Richard Joseph “Joe” Aynesworth, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025, at his home in Hondo, TX surrounded by family.
Joe was born in Houston, TX to James Levan and Winnie Bell Aynesworth on May 17, 1943. He was raised in East Texas and was drafted into the army in 1962 while living in Dallas, TX. He served in the United States Army for 25 years (1962-1987). He was a veteran of Vietnam serving two tours. He served as a Drill Sgt. and as Military Police during his enlistment. He retired on December 1, 1987, as an Army Captain.
After military retirement, he relocated to Hondo, TX continuing his law enforcement career working for Hondo and Devine Police Departments as Chief of Police. He also worked at the Medina County Sheriff's Office and as the Medina County Veteran Service Officer, where he fully retired at the age of 75.
Joe served in many capacities for different organizations within the City of Hondo. He was an active member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Men's ACTS. He was instrumental in starting Youth ACTS for St. John's.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, James Levan and Winnie Bell Aynesworth; in-laws, Roger and Frances Robles; brothers, Frank A. Hayes, and J. K. Aynesworth; sisters, Jimmie Sue Davis and Elizabeth Aynesworth; grandson, Jeffrey Dalton Aynesworth; granddaughter, Britani Gary; and great-grandson Cassian Aynesworth.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Connie Robles Aynesworth; sons, Gerald (Yvette), Andrew (Shannon), and John (Susan); daughter Katherine (Larry), 18 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and numerous family members and friends.
His love of family, friends, and life will remain a part of our hearts forever.
The family requests memorials in Joe's memory be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Youth ACTS, VFW Post 3891, P.O. Box 546, D'Hanis, TX 78850, or a charity of your choice.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Hondo Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at St John's Catholic Church on January 16, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a procession to Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery for interment at 2:15 p.m., shelter #2
